I am happy to share that my latest book, Achievers – Ordinary People Who Do Extraordinary Things, is being used in the classroom at Linwood Monroe Middle School in St. Paul. Here is the lesson plan the teachers there have put together.
AVID College and Career Lesson Plans Guidance in the later years of middle school, and particularly the time of transition to high school, can put students on a successful path to college education. Challenging students to see college admission and attendance as the goal after high school. At this stage, the advisor and counselor’s role should include:
- Encouraging students to assess their interests, strengths, and academic habits
- Helping students understand basic concepts regarding college options and financing a college education
- Providing a template for the college preparatory curriculum that students should plan for high school years
- Encouraging students to understand how they can build a profile and support network that will help them reach their college goals
The following lesson plans lays a comprehensive foundation to address all of the above. All 8th grade foundation classes will read “Achievers- Ordinary People Who Do Extraordinary Things” by Rob Severson. The intent of this book is to educate and inspire.
Opening Discussion: Now that students have had a chance to read about how others have achieved their career/life goals, as a class take a look at all of the different components, obstacles, and advice that they were challenged with along the way.
Activity: As a class discuss and outline one of the Achievers story together. Highlighting: (see page 4- 6 in Achiever book) Name, age, ethnicity Family background What did “Achiever” wanted to be while growing up Educational background Jobs Mentors Obstacles or problems they encountered Defining moments in their career How did they define success? What were their “keys to success”? Goal for their future Best advice for young people today?
